Satellite-powered connectivity will support enhanced online education in conflict-affected regions in South Sudan and Uganda

MCLEAN, Va. – Intelsat, operator of one of the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial networks, announced today a groundbreaking partnership with Academy Award-winning actor and humanitarian Forest Whitaker’s nonprofit, the Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI), to revolutionize access to education in conflict-affected regions across Africa. The collaboration will deliver for the first time high-speed internet connectivity to WPDI’s Community Learning Centers in South Sudan and Uganda, creating digital bridges to education for thousands of young people in areas where infrastructure has been insufficient or compromised.

Intelsat will equip 10 centers—seven in South Sudan and three in Uganda—with satellite connectivity. Over the course of this three-year partnership, Intelsat will provide equipment, managed connectivity services, installation, and ongoing technical support. This unprecedented effort will bring reliable internet access to communities where traditional connectivity infrastructure is inadequate for modern online education.

“Education is the foundation for peace,” said Forest Whitaker. “At WPDI, we use technology as a conduit to opportunity—bringing knowledge to young people whose lives have been upended by violence and political unrest. With the right tools, youths can reclaim their futures to become powerful agents of peace in their communities.”

The initiative comes at a critical time, as digital inequality continues to widen globally. According to the International Telecommunication Union, a mere 19% of people in the least developed nations, like South Sudan and Uganda, use the internet. In areas directly affected by conflict, these numbers drop even further, creating significant barriers to education and opportunity for vulnerable populations. By improving digital access, Intelsat and WPDI are providing learning center trainees with the resources they need to become drivers of positive change in their community and beyond. Graduates of WPDI programs have gone on to become community leaders, educators, and advocates, exemplified by individuals like Benson Lugwar, a former child soldier who is now an elected official and radio host in Uganda.

“At Intelsat, we are great believers in the power of connectivity to promote education and sustainable development around the world,” said Dave Wajsgras, CEO of Intelsat. “Forest Whitaker and WPDI’s efforts represent exactly the kind of transformative work that satellite communications can enable. We’re proud to support WPDI’s efforts to bring young people together, close the digital divide, and create pathways to prosperity in communities that need it most.”

The satellite-powered connectivity will enable WPDI to significantly expand its educational offerings, providing access to digital resources, online courses, and virtual exchange programs that were previously impossible in these remote locations. Students will gain critical digital literacy skills alongside WPDI’s established curriculum in conflict resolution, entrepreneurship, and community development.

About WPDI

The Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI) is a non-governmental organization with an international scope and reach, committed to fostering peace and resilience by disseminating skills and promoting climate-sensitive and sustainable development in countries and places affected by violence, poverty, environmental disruption, and marginalization. In Africa, Europe, as well as Latin and North America, WPDI develops a wide range of programs aimed at training and supporting underprivileged individuals and groups, with a particular focus on youth and women, enabling them to become empowered as mediators, educators, entrepreneurs, and leaders, fostering positive transformation within their communities and beyond. To achieve its objectives, WPDI works with the communities to design and implement integrated programs in the four areas of Peacebuilding, Livelihood, Health and Well-being, and Sports. WPDI was founded in 2012 by the artist, social activist, and UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace, Forest Whitaker. www.wpdi.org

MCLEAN, Va. – Intelsat, operator of one of the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial networks, announced an expansion of its collaboration with iKO Media Group (iKOMG), a global leader in broadcast and media solutions, promoting the distribution of religious channels globally through their project, “Faith Beyond.”

iKOMG’s Faith Beyond package is a fully managed, all-in-one service designed to support the specific needs of faith-based broadcasters looking to expand their reach and deepen audience engagement. Delivered via Intelsat’s Galaxy 19, Faith Beyond provides a complete distribution and engagement ecosystem. The solution integrates a variety of components including satellite broadcasting, OTT streaming, live events, cloud-native playout and metadata management into a single offering.

“Faith Beyond emphasizes our commitment to empowering faith-based broadcasters with the tools they need to thrive in a competitive media landscape,” said Rashmin Abhani, SVP Presale & Satellite Resource Management at iKOMG. “Combined with the unmatched reach and reliability of Galaxy 19, Faith Beyond enables ministries to effortlessly expand and engage with their audience. Our collaboration with Intelsat is built on a shared dedication to excellence, accessibility and scalable growth, delivering solutions broadcasters can trust.”

“The iKOMG dedication to providing high-quality religious content globally aligns perfectly with Intelsat’s mission to support and grow new opportunities for content providers,” said Rhys Morgan, RVP EMEA region, Intelsat. “This renewal underscores the enduring relevance of linear TV and free-to-air platforms such as Galaxy 19, demonstrating its continued importance for North American audience.”

This deal uses Intelsat’s Galaxy 19 (G-19) satellite, a premier free-to-air, direct-to-home neighborhood that provides broadcasters with a powerful platform to reach diverse audiences across North America. G-19 provides 5.7 million viewers with access to more than 110 channels, originating from 35 countries in over 20 languages. In addition to prominent faith-based programming, G-19 is home to premium entertainment, news and free-ad-support-streaming content.

Intelsat recently announced audience measurement capabilities to its enhanced VideoNow electronic program guide (EPG) for G-19, representing a significant step toward ad-monetization in the direct-to-home (DTH) free-to-air (FTA) satellite video market.

Unlike broadband-dependent services, G-19 is capable of reaching all households in North America, ensuring content is accessible regardless of internet reliability.

Landmark approval enables Intelsat to expand broadcast media services across Indian subcontinent and around the world

MCLEAN, Va. – Intelsat, operator of one of the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial networks, became one of the first foreign satellite operators to receive approval from the Indian government to provide extensive satellite coverage directly to India’s broadcast media companies, a significant regulatory achievement that puts Intelsat on an accelerated path to offering new services and further India investment.

The company has secured authorization for four geostationary (GEO) satellites providing C-band coverage over India: IS-17, IS-20, IS-36 and IS-39 satellites. The approved satellite fleet will primarily serve India’s dynamic broadcast media industry, enabling enhanced content delivery and distribution capabilities across the subcontinent and from India to other regions of the world. This regulatory milestone underscores Intelsat’s commitment to expanding its presence in India and fostering technological advancement in the region.

“This approval represents a significant step forward in Intelsat’s contribution to India’s space commerce sector, a source of great national pride,” said Gaurav Kharod, Regional Vice President for Asia Pacific at Intelsat. “Our extensive satellite network with four satellites covering the region will provide Indian broadcasters with reliable, high-quality connectivity solutions that meet their evolving needs. This authorization enables us to better serve our customers and contribute to India’s growing media landscape.”

Following the authorization from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), Intelsat won new business from three of India’s largest media companies. This new and expanded service will see Intelsat deliver the full portfolio of media content to viewers in India.

Groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding brings seamless, global connectivity closer to reality for connected cars, agriculture, and heavy machinery vehicles

McLean, VA – Intelsat and Cubic³ have successfully completed a critical vehicle satellite connectivity test, marking a significant milestone in their joint mission to create a seamless connectivity service for all types of vehicles. The test demonstrated successful integration between Intelsat satellites and Cubic³’s software platform, showcasing how terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks can seamlessly link to deliver always-on connectivity regardless of location.

“Our Memorandum of Understanding and successful test brings us closer to our vision of truly ubiquitous connectivity,” said Bruno Fromont, Intelsat Chief Technology Officer. “By combining Intelsat’s satellite expertise with Cubic³’s innovative connectivity platform, we’re creating solutions that will keep vehicles connected anywhere in the world, enabling critical functions from broadband connectivity, diagnostics to eventually supporting autonomous driving capabilities.”

The successful test focused on a commercial land mobile use case featuring Intelsat’s FlexMove Fleet product and Cubic³ Cloud interface, proving the viability of integrated connectivity solutions for heavy machinery customers. This demonstration represents a major step forward in the collaboration between Intelsat, Cubic³ and SoftBank Corp. The joint collaboration is expected to create a new, differentiated one-stop shop solution for the land mobile industry, offering customers the ability to create customized connectivity solutions that leverage both terrestrial cellular networks and non-terrestrial networks.

The collaboration addresses a critical gap in today’s increasingly connected world. Despite advances in autonomous mobility for connected cars, ships, drones, and other vehicles, many areas remain without ground-based mobile network coverage, requiring separate devices and accounts to connect to non-terrestrial networks. The Intelsat- Cubic³-SoftBank Corp. cooperative effort aims to eliminate this fragmentation, offering one device and one account that maintains connectivity across available networks worldwide.

Nick Power, Chief Technology Officer at Cubic³, highlighted the strategic importance of the collaboration: “Our work with Intelsat is foundational to delivering on the promise of software-defined vehicles. Car manufacturers need global, high-speed, always-on connectivity to transform into software-first entities and meet evolving consumer mobility demands. This test demonstrates how our technologies can work together to enable that future.”

The planned integrated solution will initially use geostationary (GEO) satellites for applications such as fleet management, telematics, predictive maintenance, and software updates in areas beyond terrestrial coverage. As new low Earth orbit (LEO) constellations launch, the system will evolve to support higher-bandwidth use cases including high-definition map downloads, and cloud-based vehicle diagnostics using digital twins. “Non-terrestrial networks are not just a backup option—they’re an essential component of the connectivity ecosystem that will power tomorrow’s vehicles,” Fromont said.

This collaboration also builds on the groundbreaking collaboration agreement signed in 2024 between SoftBank Corp. and Intelsat to create a single “Ubiquitous Network.” This network leverages the same standard architectures, interfaces, and processes that enable roaming between terrestrial cellular networks today, accelerating the commercial adoption of mobility solutions based on new 3GPP 5G standards for non-terrestrial networks.

MCLEAN, Va. – Intelsat, operator of one of the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial networks, became the first and only satellite operator to complete a satellite life-extension mission. The Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV) added five years of reliable service and global connectivity to the Intelsat 901 (IS-901) satellite and its customers.

Satellite Life-Extension vehicle in space
Mission Extension Vehicle 1 (MEV-1) safely departs from Intelsat 901 (IS-901) in the Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO) after providing five years of life extension service.  The earth is visible in the background as well as MEV-1’s docking mechanism on the right.

The MEV mission proved that in-orbit servicing enhances satellite sustainability and efficiency in space,” said Jean-Luc Froeliger, SVP of Space Systems, Intelsat. “We were able to provide five additional years of reliable service to our Network, Media and Mobility customers and paved the way for future advancements in satellite servicing.”

Behind the Scenes: Mission Extension Vehicle (video)

The world’s first MEV, developed by Northrop Grumman Corporation’s (NYSE: NOC) Space Logistics LLC, successfully detached from IS-901 after moving the satellite to the graveyard orbit, where the satellite will be decommissioned after nearly 24 years of service. The MEV first docked with IS-901 in February of 2020 nearly 19 years after the satellite was first launched.

Geostationary satellites use propellant to remain at a specific orbital location, relocate to a new location or eventually be moved to a graveyard orbit. The MEV has its own propellant and thrusters that operate independently of the satellite. Through in-orbit docking, the MEV allows Intelsat to extend the life of a satellite by several years when the original propellant of that satellite has been depleted.

“Using the MEV to extend the life of IS-901 was a great commercial success for our customers, as well as a historic technical achievement,” Froeliger said. “We had to do a rendezvous and approach of two spacecraft moving at 3km per second,” Froeliger said.

Following this success, Intelsat partnered with Northrop Grumman on a second mission in 2021, using MEV-2 to extend the life of Intelsat 10-02, a combination that remains operational today. Intelsat continues to seek out and invest in next-generation satellite life-extension projects and other innovation setting the stage for continued advancements and enabling emerging space companies to shape the future of the industry.

MCLEAN, Va. – Intelsat, operator of one of the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial networks, has introduced audience measurement capabilities to its VideoNow electronic program guide (EPG), a significant step toward ad-monetization in the direct-to-home (DTH) free-to-air (FTA) satellite video market.

VideoNow, available on Intelsat’s Galaxy 19 platform, has long provided viewers with an easy way to find and access free-to-air content. Now, with its expansion into the Google TV app store through a partnership with Sofia Digital, VideoNow enhances the viewer experience by seamlessly integrating with connected TVs’ satellite tuners, making content discovery even more intuitive.

The app is currently available in North America, with plans for expansion to other connected TV platforms.

Beyond improved navigation, the latest update introduces real-time audience analytics, offering programmers valuable insights into viewer behavior, including:

  • Real-time visits and unique page views
  • Channels selected for viewing
  • Browsing patterns by genre
  • General viewer location data

These metrics provide content providers with the necessary data to implement targeted ad-insertion strategies, creating new revenue opportunities for providers of DTH FTA services.

Galaxy 19 delivers more than 100 channels across various genres, including news, entertainment, multicultural, and religious programming. Recent additions to the platform include traditional free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channels such as The World Poker Tour, Euronews, WeDo Amor and Wild TV.

MCLEAN, Va. – Intelsat, operator of one of the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial networks, has signed two IntelsatOne IP agreements providing full time distribution of content, allowing the new customers faster and more efficient ways to deliver programming to the end viewer.

“Broadcasters and programmers are looking for reliable and cost-effective alternatives to contribute and distribute video feeds regionally and globally,” said Pascale Fromont, vice president and general manager of Media, Intelsat. “Since its inception in 2023, IntelsatOne IP is uniquely designed to increase the reach and flexibility of the Intelsat Global Hybrid Media Network, providing customers with more options for video distribution and contribution, and back-up and disaster recovery systems.”

MuxIP, a company that empowers media companies and content owners to create, distribute and monetize FAST channels will use IntelsatOne IP to transport its FAST channels including World Poker Tour and Wild TV for satellite distribution in North America. The content is sent to Intelsat’s Mountainside teleport in Maryland via IntelsatOne IP where it will uplink to Galaxy 19, a free to air direct-to-home platform for distribution.

“We were looking to find markets for our FAST channels that have ad support in them, cable and satellite offer just that. We see satellite playing a huge role and are excited about expanding our satellite offering with new kinds of content” said MuxIP Founder and CEO, Tom Link.

Universal Church will use IntelsatOne IP as primary and backup transport to ensure reliable distribution to viewers of its English HD video and radio channels in Sub-Saharan Africa. To accomplish this, the channels are sent from the IntelsatOne IP PoP in Johannesburg, South Africa to the Fuchsstadt, Germany teleport where the content is uplinked to Intelsat 20 for free to air direct-to-home distribution.

IntelsatOne IP is fully integrated into Intelsat’s hybrid terrestrial and satellite infrastructure, providing a new global IP software video management layer to an existing, terrestrial fiber network. This provides media customers with more connectivity options in content distribution allowing customers to distribute content through a hybrid terrestrial-satellite connection, as well as provide a back-up or disaster recovery system.

MCLEAN, Va. – Intelsat, operator of one of the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial networks, won a U.S. Space Force contract to provide commercial satellite communications bandwidth, equipment and services to the U.S. Defense Department (DoD) for global maritime coverage. The 12-month task order is part of the proliferated Low Earth Orbit (pLEO) 10-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract vehicle, established in 2023 to allow the DoD streamlined access to the growing number of low-earth orbit (LEO) SATCOM services offered via authorized resellers and operators to optimize and enhance all-domain communications.

“As a trusted provider of resilient satellite communication services to the U.S. Government for 60 years, Intelsat is uniquely positioned to offer value-added solutions to the Defense Department through this important program,” said David Broadbent, President of Intelsat Government Solutions. “Our partnerships with LEO operators, combined with our fleet of more than 55 GEO satellites, global teleports, security operations center and one of the largest terrestrial network in the world, positions Intelsat to provide strong but flexible communications during critical missions.”

For this task order, Intelsat will deliver satellite capacity services in support of global maritime operations for multiple government end users. The pLEO contract has rapidly expanded across the DoD, streamlining access to LEO satellite services and accelerating innovation for warfighters. In just over a year, spending surpassed $660 million, exceeding two-thirds of the original $900 million cap. Recognizing its impact, DISA subsequently raised the pLEO contract ceiling to $13 billion just 15 months after its award to meet growing demand. As a leader in the telecommunications industry, Intelsat is committed to securing and executing future pLEO task orders to support the evolving needs of the DoD.

McLEAN, Va. – Intelsat, operator of one of the world’s largest satellite and terrestrial networks, and the Cochise County, Arizona Sheriff’s Office launched the use of Intelsat’s Multi-Layer Communication System (MLCS) to enable border security forces to safely operate and communicate in extreme, remote environments where radio, cellular and infrastructure services do not exist.

“Our commitment to deploying innovative and reliable satellite communication devices for law enforcement is not just about business, it is about supporting the men and women who keep our communities safe,” said Intelsat President of Government Solutions David Broadbent.
“When officers in the field can seamlessly share real-time information and coordinate responses using MLCS, they can work more effectively and safely.”

Intelsat’s MLCS will combine high-throughput, low-latency low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite service with 5G cellular and a “police radio” gateway to provide voice and broadband connectivity to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office in previously unconnected areas along the U.S. southern border. By integrating satellite, cellular, and ground-tactical radio systems, the managed service ensures seamless communication with the Sheriff’s 911 dispatch center, even when officers are two miles from a vehicle.

Beyond voice communication, the system supports broadband connectivity critical safety features like GPS-based “officer down” alerts, ensuring life-saving capabilities in the field.

As part of the agreement, 10 systems were installed in police vehicles for mobility, and an additional four will be placed at the 911 dispatch center in Sierra Vista, Arizona. The connectivity provided by Intelsat’s MLCS will enable critical, coordinated communications between Cochise County first responders and other local, state and federal agencies.
